Kelham Hall Parterre
Restoration of a Victorian parterre garden
The restoration of the parterre has always been the ambition of the owner and represents the start of the service of works to revitalise the property and reinstate some of its lost Heritage. The grounds of the Grade I listed Gilbert Scott Hall, was redesigned at the time by the prominent Victorian landscape architect William Andrews Nesfield, who’s works includes Kew Gardens and Regent’s Park, London.
Though the Park and Garden at Kelham Hall is less documented than its buildings, and not listed in the English Heritage’s Register of Parks and Garden’s in Nottinghamshire, a review was conducted in 1995. The Park and Garden still holds a significant historic value, and its true value remains largely unrecognised.
The Restoration of the Parterre provided a valuable opportunity to raise the profile of the gardens, enables the Hall to be viewed in the setting as originally designed, and importantly, create a beautiful area to be enjoyed by visitors to the site.
The Parterre is within the proximity of Kelham Hall and next to the elaborate brick paved terrace designed by Gilbert Scott himself. Furthermore, there are various of other listed elements within the proximity of the Parterre. The contractor provided an excellent and careful approach relating to the protection of the listed elements, and the work was executed with high quality workmanship and accuracy.
Where discrepancies were identified on site, the contractor did not hesitate to contact Guy Taylor Associates to discuss the options and agreed a solution. Thus, the precision and high standard of quality control was achieved throughout..
