Eden Hall Spa Courtyard
Delivering a unique and tranquil experience within the heart of a former listed Country House and Coach house.
Since 2002, Guy Taylor Associates have been working alongside Eden Hall Day Spa (now Barons Eden Ltd) at its award-winning destination spa - Eden Hall.
Our involvement at Eden Hall Spa began with the restoration and conversion of a substantial Grade II* listed country house and Grade II Coach House, formerly known as Elston Towers, into a day spa. The facilities have expanded over the years, with GTA helping to deliver each phase of the development.
The most recent development at Eden Hall spa, focused on the re-imagining of the main courtyard, to provide a unique outdoor spa experience. The space is bounded by both the former listed country house and the Coach House. The high level of heritage significance represented at the site required a carefully considered approach, to ensure that the heritage value was retained and enhanced where possible, whilst still delivering the high expectations associated with a luxury spa complex.
The project sought to deliver a new and unique spa experience within a key central area, enhancing the connectivity of spaces across the site. The project included a sauna, relaxation room, café and external vitality pool, set within a contemporary formally landscaped courtyard garden.
The courtyard character and the prominent garden walls were adopted as a design language to help conceal the larger structure containing the sauna, relaxation room and plant. By positioning this structure to the outside of the garden wall, the resulting impact on the setting of the listed building was minimised.
This character and the use of the garden walls was also successfully integrated for the creation of the new café. This takes the form of a traditional lean-to vinery, echoing those that once stood on the site, and providing a light and airy setting to enjoy bistro-style dining as part of the spa experience.
The use of a formal landscape design enabled all of the various elements to be connected through carefully considered pathways and sight-lines, whilst also responding to the formal character and symmetry of the principal building. This structured approach enabled the creation of a series of more intimate spaces where guests could relax, with a sense of privacy, separate from the more active pool and café areas. Each space is set across three terraces, to address the gradual slope of the site, with full accessibility provided. Planting is used to soften the space and to create enclosure and privacy between the various seating areas.
