Barn Conversion and New Dwellings
A residential scheme of conversion and new build at a historic farmstead in the village centre
There were two phases of planning: The first was to convert two historic barns into modern dwellings, including substantial extensions. One of these is an early c18th timber framed barn, the frame of which was reused from an even older aisled barn. In designing the conversion of this we worked closely with heritage structural engineers to come up with a solution that retained, protected, and made visible the timber frame. This planning application was approved in 2022.
The second phase proposed 5 new dwellings on the site, including the reconstruction of a historic farmhouse and reimagining of former cottages on the site. The frontage houses adopted a traditional architecture, respectful of the historic character of the site and village, whilst the other dwellings sought to emulate the historic forms and pattern of development of traditional agricultural barns, with more contemporary detailing.
