Bowgate Mews
St Albans
The proposed design gracefully embraces the elegance of Georgian architecture with two thoughtfully conceived terraces. The first terrace draws inspiration from a classic Georgian mews, extending east to west across the site and featuring five exquisite three-bedroom homes. The second terrace of the two, comprise of four splendid four-bedroom townhouses arranged from north to south.
In keeping with authentic Georgian style, the design will incorporate distinct period features, including pristine, white-painted wooden sash windows and a combination of straight and arched lintels, meticulously placed according to the golden ratio. The shared spaces will also incorporate cobble setts, enhancing the overall Georgian aesthetic and harmoniously reflecting the heritage of the listed buildings at the forefront of the site.
The buildings are situated within a sensitive heritage context, nestled in the esteemed St Albans Conservation Area (Character Area 4a, the Commercial Centre). This prime location is surrounded by numerous listed and locally listed buildings, underscoring the historical significance of the site. Among these notable structures is the neighbouring Grade II* listed Ivy House at 107 St Peter’s Street, to which 105 is adjoined. The St Albans Conservation Character Statement describes Ivy House as the landmark building of the trio, highlighting its architectural and historical prominence.
